Host Coin of Dombes, Vlack Unlisted Type - 1640 countermark on 1594 [Treboux Mint] Dombes Douzain of Henri II de Bourbon-Montpensier, Divo Dombes 99. Fine, the central details closer to the VF level, the peripheral legends weaker as struck, with perhaps half the letters visible, fortunately including the final digit of the date which makes attribution easy. The centers are sharp, the countermark applied to the obverse, causing the expected flattening of the reverse; the planchet lightly clipped, but a nice medium gray with just a few tiny green spots on the obverse. Henri succeeded to the lands and title after the death of his father Francois in 1592; his career was more modest, and he had only a single child, a daughter who married Gaston d’Orleans (a name you will see again in a few lots!), known as “Monsieur” – the only surviving brother of King Louis XIII. That marriage ended with her death a few days after childbirth – the daughter, Anne Marie Louise d’Orleans became infamous as Le Grande Mademoiselle, perhaps the richest princess in the world to that time, and one who died unmarried and childless, leaving her immense fortune to her cousin Phillippe, the younger brother of King Louis XIV.
