Host Coin of Henri II (ruled 1547-1559), Vlack 1g Type - 1640 countermark on a 1551-Cross on Globe [Mountelimar Mint] Henri II Douzain aux Croissants, Ciani 1305, Duplessy 997, Sombart 4380. Very Fine, a choice, well-struck and pleasing example of this distinct variety within the overall type – where the other mints placed their mark directly below the shield, Mountelimar placed theirs in the legend at the base of the obverse. Sharp and pleasing, the legends are full and mostly strong save for the area right at the obverse countermark and corresponding portion of the reverse. Light silvery grey, the surfaces are hard and pleasing, with few marks from circulation. A rare date/mint combination, the Mountelimar mint had one of the lowest outputs for the mints that produced this coinage in 1551. Quite pleasing, especially with the bold date and unusual mintmark.
