Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1591-K [Bordeaux Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H, 2nd type. Ciani 1563, Duplessy 1247, Sombart 4420. Fine/Very Fine, the reverse stronger than the obverse. Well struck, the legends mostly full though the tops of some letters are off the planchet. The date is strong, the lower half of the mintmark visible. Medium golden toning atop silvery surfaces, the countermark on the obverse rather deeply impressed. This is the general design the three pieces above set out to copy, and this is not unexpected since it is the most common of the Henri IV douzains, struck from 1589 to 1603 at a large number of French mints, many of which reported mintages into the millions (one even at 11 million!). The Bordeaux mint was often one of the smaller mintages in the years it struck the type, and for 1591 it produced just over 45,000 coins. It is sufficiently rare as a regular coin that Sombart was not able to trace any 1591-K issues, and only 6 for all dates combined for the Bordeaux mint!
