Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1592-C [St-Lo Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H, 2nd type, Ciani 1563, Duplessy 1247, Sombart 4420. Extremely Fine, an amazing grade level for any countermarked douzain. Boldly struck, with literally everything there – the legends are full, the individual letters all strong, as is the date and the mintmark at the base of the shield. The design details are also sharp, the countermark applied to the obverse but not obscuring much detail on that side and flattening out just part of one arm of the cross on the reverse. The planchet itself is large, and nearly unclipped – a rare occurrence in the series since people would often clip off tiny bits of the billon and try to pass the lighter douzain at full value (this happened more frequently with silver coins of the era, especially so with the Massachusetts silver issues in North America – it is likely this occurred more often in the New World, where coins were more likely to circulate at stated value instead of by weight). Light silver, the surfaces with a very light roughness, but nearly free of marks or damage from actual circulation. High grade survivors of any 1640 countermark are indeed rare.
