Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1594 Sisteron Mint [No Mintmark] Henri IV Douzain.  Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy 1246 and Sombart 4418.  Choice Very Fine or so, the peripheral legends mostly strong save a few letters at the top right obverse; a few others slightly off the smaller planchet, but overall sharp.  The design detail is quite strong, the countermark applied to the left center obverse, with very little flattening from it on the reverse side.  Lovely light pewter, the surfaces with ample amounts of silvering on either side and with a nice, hard and choice look.  There is no mintmark at the base of the shield or in the legends, which may indicates the Sisteron mint, which did not use a mintmark for 1591-5 according to Sombart.  Quite rare as a regular coin, with Sombart reporting just a single example seen in the collections he surveyed.  Likely unique (or nearly so) with a 1640 countermark, and especially desirable in this kind of choice condition.
