Host Coin of Clement VIII, Struck at Avignon, Vlack 1m Type - 1640 countermark on a 1595 [Avignon Mint] Papal Douzain of Clement VIII, Berman 1516, no letters in obverse shield, Jerusalem cross and lions on reverse. Fine or so, again struck on the typical smaller planchet, with just a few obverse letters visible, though the shield itself is sharp and shows the A’s flanking it. The reverse fared better, with over half the legend visible, though the tops of some letters are off the planchet; the date is visible, with the final digit sharpest. The countermark is boldly stamped on the obverse. Distinctly copper colored, a piece that is certainly of lower fineness billon than authorized (if the King’s mints were doing it, perhaps it is not surprising that the Pope’s mints would too).
