Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1597-Z [Grenoble Mint] Henri IV Douzain du Dauphine, 2nd type, Ciani 1564, Duplessy 1257, Sombart 4442. Very Fine, very well struck, the legends full, the date strong. Sharp design detail, showing most of the dolphins in the obverse shield (one slightly weakened by the countermark on the reverse side). Medium silver gray, clean and nice eye appeal, and one of the better-struck Grenoble issues we have seen. What makes this interesting is that while the coin itself is a genuine, regal issue the countermark appears to be a contemporary counterfeit one – the increased circulating value here not accruing to the French Crown, but to whoever applied the countermark! Rare as such, one sees counterfeit marks more often on counterfeit douzains than on real ones. This was the final year (of just five years) that Grenoble struck this design type.
