Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1601 Star [Chambery Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H, 1st type. Ciani Unlisted, Duplessy 1246, Sombart 4418. Nearly Very Fine, the surfaces not as nice as the strike, but that is almost irrelevant for an extremely rare host coin such as this! The legends are mostly full, the 1601 date sharp, with the distinct star mintmark after it on the reverse also bold. Nice design detail on either side, the countermark somewhat weakly impressed on the reverse, causing very little flattening on the obverse. Mostly darker pewter fields with lighter devices, the surfaces with a light roughness to them and a small planchet clip and crack at the lower right obverse. Quite rare, this 1st type of douzain had ended in 1596, but for some reason Chambery struck this issue 5 years later – despite never having struck this type in any of the previous years! The reported mintage was a few hundred pieces more than the lowest reported figure – and is rare enough today that Sombart was able to trace just four examples for this year and mint! We have not seen another with the 1640 countermark, and if the piece isn’t unique as such there will be so few known that acquiring another may prove impossible!
