Host Coin of Henri IV (ruled 1590-1610), Vlack 1k Type - 1640 countermark on a 1957-& [Limoges Mint] Henri IV Douzain aux Deux H, 2nd type. Ciani 1563, Duplessy 1247, Sombart 4420. Fine to Very Fine. No, that is NOT a typo, and no the coin is not a counterfeit! The piece IS dated 1957 – a good three and a half centuries the date it should have borne, 1597! An interesting die-cutting error, but one that presumably made no difference to the coins ability to circulate (though one wonders what someone would have thought receiving a coin dated that far into the future!). Most of the legends visible on either side, the tops of some letters cut off to planchet clipping, the mintmark sharp and the unusual date all there at the top of the reverse. The countermark is applied to the obverse. Gunmetal gray, the surfaces hard and pleasing to the eye, with just minimal circulation marks. An extremely rare error – and though no mintage figures were kept for each die variety, it is likely that the error was caught and the offending die pulled and either repunched with the correct date or scrapped. Sombart was able to find just two examples with the 1957 date, and it is highly likely that this example with the 1640 countermark is unique as such!
