Host Coin of Charles VIII (ruled 1483-1497), Vlack 1d Type - 1640 countermark on a Charles VIII Blanc a la Couronne, Ciani 812, Duplessy 591a. Struck 1491. Choice Very Fine, an amazing grade level for such an early host coin that was nearly 150 years old by the time it was countermarked. Well struck, the central designs bold, the peripheral weaker but with nearly all the legends visible on either side. The countermark was applied on the obverse, but with enough force that part of the punch went all the way through the coin, leaving a small void at the left of the countermark. Pleasing deep golden hue, the surfaces choice for the grade with just minimal marks from circulation. An exceptional example from this extremely rare ruler, unknown to Vlack, and one that will simply not be bettered.
