Host Coin of Francois I (ruled 1515-1547), Vlack 1f Type - 1640 countermark on a Francois I Douzain a la Croisette, Ciani 1170, Duplessy 927, Sombart 4368. Authorized March 19, 1541. Fine or better, the obverse center weaker than the rest, but the distinct shield fully outlined, the reverse cross stronger, and with much of the legends visible. Visible, though faint, is an “M” mintmark at the base of the obverse shield for the Chambord Mint, unlisted in Duplessy which shows this type struck only at Turin and Rennes, though listed as one of many known mints by Sombart. The countermark on the reverse appears a bit thick and chunky, and may be a contemporary counterfeit mark – though almost no research has yet been done on the different fleur-de-lys stamps used in 1640. Antiqued pewter color, the usual edge splits common to the douzains, but few actual marks from circulation, and a piece with distinct eye appeal.
