Host Coin of Louis XII (ruled 1497-1515), Vlack 1e Type - 1640 countermark on a Louis XII Blanc aux Couronelles, Ciani 928, Duplessy 664. Authorized April 25, 1498. Fine to Very Fine, central details sharper, weaker around the peripheries as struck, and the planchet a bit smaller than the dies themselves, though well over half the legends are visible on either side. The countermark on the reverse is quite bold, and the piece is a pleasing golden hue with minimal marks from 140 years of circulation before it was countermarked. Vlack lists the Louis XII host coins as “to date none reported,” and while a few have since been found they remain extremely rare. The present collection contains three examples, the host coins from different mints, showing even greater depth that the collector can pursue.
