1692-A [Paris Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 93, Ciani 1980, Hodder 5, Vlack 4a type, Breen 276 [except for the Gadoury numbers, these attribution numbers are the same for nearly all dates and mints, and will not be repeated in the following lots, though the Gadoury number will]. Very Fine, boldly struck over an earlier douzain that had the 1640 countermark applied, which is here visible at the center obverse. As always with a coin that was struck without a collar, over another coin that was also struck without a collar, the planchet is not round, and striking the same piece of metal twice will almost invariably cause some edge splits – this is the norm for the recoined issues and does not affect grade or value. The overstriking is strong, and the coin has full legends and date; the mintmark is weak at the center reverse, but the mint is certain because of the horseshoe-shaped different that appears at the base of the obverse of the Paris Mint issues of this type (see the 1693-A piece offered later in this sale for a comparison). This date and mint was unlisted in all the earlier editions of Gadoury, but was finally listed in the 2018 volume as coming over earlier douzains, but is UNLISTED over one with a 1640 countermark.
