1693-D [Lyon Mint] Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. Extremely Fine, struck on a virgin planchet. An unusual specimen, quite boldly struck across 95% of the obverse, weak at just the lower right affecting a few letters there, the crowned shield bold, as is the date. The reverse has a bold design and mintmark at the center, the peripheral legends quite weak, with roughly ¼ visible. Part of that is due to planchet quality, the reverse side showing some pre-strike flaws that decreased the amount of metal available to flow into the die on the side. The obverse is nice and silvered on the well-struck area, the weaker area is a darker hue, as is most of the reverse. In terms of actual wear this is a piece that likely never circulated. The virgin planchet variation was unlisted in earlier editions of Gadoury, which gave a mintage for only recoined specimens (see the above lot); it would seem that during a given coinage period that if the mint ran out of older douzains they would keep the presses going with virgin planchets – some mints would have more of the older douzains, others would have few and the ratios of réforme to flan neuf would be different for every mint and year. The new edition of Gadoury does contain both the recoined and new planchet stock versions, the virgin stock coins being much rarer, and this example just one of two we know that were reported to the editors of that book.
