1694-Crowned L [Lilles Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. Very Good/Fine, overstruck on an earlier douzain, much of the peripheries weaker due to interaction with the lettering from the undertype; the date is quite weak, but the final digit can be made out and since there was only one year this was struck that ended in a 4 the attribution can be made. The mintmark on the reverse is stronger and is clearly the Crowned L (which was the Lilles mint) instead of the regular L (which was Bayonne). The obverse shield is weak, the reverse device stronger. Medium gray, lightly rough but not too bad. This was a completely unlisted date and mintmark in earlier editions of Gadoury, for any of his three planchet types. The new edition lists it under his 91 group, but only on new planchet stocks, so this is UNLISTED as coming over an earlier douzain, and while the flan neuf pieces are considered very rare, the present example must be considered extremely so. Lilles also struck the final year of this coinage, 1705 – the only mint to do so (and yes, one is offered later on). The present coin is lower grade, but quite important.
