1695-E [Tours Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 92. Very Fine, overstruck on a MUCH larger and exceptionally rare host coin – a Charles VIII Blanc a la Couronne, which was originally struck April 24, 1488 (the host coin type is Ciani 805), meaning the coin was in circulation for over 200 years before it was overstruck by the Sol dies, and then circulated even more. An amazing overstrike, the host coin significantly larger than, so that the Sol is overstruck at the center, but nearly all of the host coin’s legend is visible in a ring outside the edge of the Sol dies, and there is a fair amount of the undertype showing through at the center obverse, where an arm of the cross cuts through the shield of the Sol. One tiny edge crack at the left obverse, not bad at all for an overstrike. Even more interesting, the reverse shows a huge cud at the left of the Sol, which clearly extended to the edge of that die – but because the host coin is so much larger it just sits in the field and doesn’t make it to the edge of the host. Darker golden hue, a really lovely example, and an eye-popping overstrike.
