1695 (likely)-V [Troyes Mint] Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. Very Fine, somewhat weakly overstruck on an earlier douzain of Henri II dated 1554, the date of the host coin strong, while that of the Sol is not visible – but it is almost certainly 1695, which is the only year that Gadoury records for this mintmark, in any of his three planchet types (and that year had pieces struck both on virgin planchet stock as well as overstruck, as seen here). Troyes used a Crowned-S mintmark for 1692 and 1693, which was likely easily confused with the regular S mintmark of Reims and in the latter year switched to the “V” mark. The host coin is quite bold, with the central design of the Sol overstrike visible at the center of either side, but only some of the legend of the Sol ever struck up (while most of the legend of the Henri II douzain is sharp). Of note, there is a large diebreak at the lower left of the Sol reverse die which may be used to match it up to a known die for this year. Medium gold, a few light edge splits as expected on an overstrike, and really quite attractive given the strength of the host coin. A paltry 50,020 were overstruck for this year, and for those contemplating a mintmark set of these issues this is one of the key coins since it was only used once!
