1696-A [Paris Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. Fine, overstruck on a 1622 One Batzen from the Swiss Canton of Zug, type of Krause-Mishler 30. The Swiss issue is larger than the Sol overstrike, which gives a significant amount of the legend from the original coin around the periphery. The 1622 date is easily visible above the smaller 1696 date of the Sol – the positioning perhaps purposely done. The Sol overstrike is weak at its central obverse, with only a trace of the legend visible, the date fortunately quite bold; the reverse is sharper at the center, with the design and mintmark strong but again only a trace of the Sol legend visible due to the overstriking. Like the earlier French douzains the Recoined Sols are usually found overstruck on, the Swiss Batzen was struck in billon. The obverse of that coin features a shield with the letters ZVG arranged at left, top and right respectively, with the legend 1622 *MON NOVA TVGIENSIS around, the letters all large. The reverse has a cross similar to that found on many French douzains, but with the legend *CVM HIS QVIOD PACE ERAMP around. This issue was only struck in 1621-1622, and while the coin itself is not difficult to find, as an undertype for a Recoined Sol it is extremely rare – and may well be unique from this particular Canton (a 1694-D overstruck on another Swiss coin from Bern, curiously also dated 1622, is offered earlier in this sale). The cataloguer wishes to thank Julia Casey for her help in identifying the host coin. Another extremely important piece for the specialist, one that will likely be impossible to replace.
