1697-“Dot in Circle” [Pau Mint] Sol de 15 Deniers de France-Navarre-Bearn, Gadoury 94. Nearly Very Fine, a very high grade for a Pau mint issue! Struck on a virgin planchet, though not perfectly round, as usual. No trace of an undertype, and Gadoury only lists the virgin planchets for this year. A few letters in NOMEN weak or gone on the obverse, the rest of the legend visible and often sharp, as is the date; the reverse is sharper and the legend is all strong. Darker pewter gray, the obverse with some light roughness at the left side, the reverse more clean. Better than most of the few Pau mint issues of this type, and we note that Gadoury needed to use a drawing to illustrate this number in his book, instead of using an actual coin! There is no reported mintage for the year in Gadoury, though it was undoubtedly quite small – the following year had 6.828 struck, the year after that 3,626 and in 1700, the final year this mint struck the issue, all of 692 coins were produced! Needless to say, their survival rate is minuscule, and they are among the most highly coveted of all the Sol issues – the distinct obverse shield design just adding to their appeal.
