1699-P [Dijon Mint] Recoined Sol de 15 Deniers, Gadoury 91. Extremely Fine, overstruck on a much earlier douzain of Henri II or III which was much larger than the Sol dies, with extensive legends and undertype visible on either side. The Sol has full legends and date, the mintmark weak at the center of the reverse, though the mint is certain due to the different at the lower obverse, which is unusually sharp here and matches to that used by Simon Roger only at Dijon, for the 1691-1738 period. The overstriking probably further expanded the large planchet for the host, resulting in a few edge splits as expected. The color is a lovely light silver with some gloss; a few light scratches at the center reverse are overpowered by the choice color and surface quality. This is a COMPLETELY UNLISTED date and mintmark combination in Gadoury, for any of his three planchet types, and is the only example that we have traced. An exceptional specimen, visually stunning due to the large undertype.
