1719-B [Rouen Mint] John Law Sol. Extremely Fine, a wonderful grade for this large, heavy coin! Everything bold, including all the hair strands on the youthful King’s head. Light brown, with a few darker specks on the obverse, the reverse with some hairline scratches around the different before the date. An interesting specimen, from a late state of the obverse die with a break connecting the dot and G of GRATIA, the obverse die also lightly doubled, while the C of FRANCIAE on the reverse was originally punched significantly far to the right, another C punched over it, and the original one easily seen with the naked eye about halfway off. Very pleasing, especially as an issue from a very rare mint – Smith’s survey noted just 3 examples in his sample of 262 Sols, and none of the denomination was illustrated for the mint in his article.
