1720/19-AA [Metz Mint] John Law Half Sol. Very Fine, well struck, the legends all sharp, as are the date and mintmark – the date clearly showing that 20 was cut over an earlier 19, doubtless redating a previously-made die for use in a new year, the 9 especially strong at the left side of the 0, the tail sticking out below. Medium brown with lighter hues, quite attractive. The John Law series has a number of overdates, some of which were known to Gadoury (including this one), others listed by Jeff Rock in an article for The C4 Newsletter. Smith also notes this variety, though it must be considered quite rare since he had just 3 examples in his census of 255 different Half Sols. While some overdates in the French series (especially in the Sous Marques) are subtle – the present example is one of the most obvious, even to the naked eye.
