1720/19-AA [Metz Mint] John Law Sol. Choice Extremely Fine, somewhat flat at the center of the obverse, but choice in every respect, quite unusual for the series, and especially so for this perhaps unique piece! Gorgeous light brown, the surfaces hard and pleasing. The legends are full, the overdate plainly visible to the naked eye, and though it is quite strong it is unlisted in any reference work. Even more amazing, the planchet is an extremely large 32 mm – a size that was known ONLY for some 1719-dated Metz Sols (one is offered earlier), but completely unknown for any dated 1720. In effect this piece is two unlisted types in one, as it is the only known overdate and the only known large planchet for the date. We have not seen another example, and it may well be unique. Both dies used on this coin are different from those used on the 1719-dated piece on the same large planchet offered earlier, which is interesting. This is the exact coin plated in Rock’s article on overdates, and is the only example noted in Smith’s census of 262 different Sols! For the specialist this is a coin that rings all the bells – choice, extremely rare (or unique), and dramatically different in appearance due to the extremely large planchet. We expect keen competition for this lot.
