1720-A [Paris Mint] John Law Sol, Possible 1720/19 Overdate. Extremely Fine in terms of strike, surfaces a little less nice. Rather bold, the legends full and the design detail strong. This exact specimen was used in Rock’s article in the Summer, 2018 issue of The C4 Newsletter describing overdates in the John Law series, and it was illustrated as a possible 1720/19; it may well be, as the 2 certainly looks as if it could have punched over a 1 and the 0 is misshapen enough that it could have been a 9 ground down and altered in the die. Regardless, even if it is a regular 1720 date, the coin is still extremely rare – Gadoury stated the variety was “reported, not confirmed” in early editions of his work, and in the recently released version it is given the highest rarity – and price – of any of the Sol coins. Out of the 262 Sols examined by Smith only 2 were of this date and mint. A major coin for the specialist in this fascinating series.
