1720-I [Limoges Mint] John Law Silver 1/3 Ecu, Gadoury 306. Extremely Fine, struck on a new planchet, without the trefoil mark under the obverse bust. Well struck, the legends, date, mintmark all bold, the design detail sharp. Lovely light toning, the surfaces clean and pleasing. A rarer mint with just 78,419 coined – a fraction of the nearly 10 million coined at Paris in the same year! This type was struck from 1720, 1721 and again in 1723, with all mints striking the first two years – and many of them striking both the recoined and flan neuf versions, which gives collectors a large series to collect, either by date and mintmark, or by trying to obtain both types for all mints and dates. The 1/3 Ecu was the workhorse silver coin in circulation at the time, the most commonly-seen silver piece in France during the John Law era.
