1720-M [Toulouse Mint] John Law Silver 1/3 Ecu, Gadoury 306. Very Fine, struck on a new planchet, without the trefoil mark under the obverse bust. Struck slightly off-center to the left, pushing the legends on that side half off the planchet and giving a large row of denticles and clear evidence of the edge of the dies to the right. The legends and date are otherwise strong. From a late state of the obverse die, with a prominent horn diebreak extending from the youthful King’s forehead, and other breaks evident in the legend. The original blank planchet was overweight and the reverse shows heavy adjustment marks at the center where some silver was filed off, bringing it down to the specified weight; there are a few light post-strike scratches on the obverse. Lightly toned gray, and pleasing overall. An extremely rare issue, UNLISTED in the Gadoury work as coming struck on virgin planchet stock – all editions of his work list this mint as only issuing recoined examples, and that is all we have seen prior to this specimen (including a nice one in the Ford sale, Lot 369). A coin that will surely excite the specialist!
