1720-S [Reims Mint] John Law Sol. Extremely Fine, the rarer and unusual type with the obverse legend originally punched into the die as LUDOVICUS XX – as seen on the 1719-dated piece offered earlier, though here from a different die. Like that one, the error was caught, and a V was punched over the last letter, though without much result as both legs of the original X are still bold; it appears that the V used here was actually from a smaller set of punches, perhaps those used for the Half Sol, as its lower point does not come all the way down to the base of the letter, as it does on the corrected 1719 obverse offered above. Mahogany fields, the surfaces hard, with some light patination and no major marks of note. Smith found 10 examples in his survey of 262 Sols, more than expected, though apparently the engraver LaHaye tried to correct the mistake several times, as there are variations in how strong the original mistaken letter is – the present example is the strongest we have seen, with the original error easily visible with the naked eye. A neat, major type in the series.
