1721-B [Rouen Mint] Copper Nine Deniers, Martin 1.1-A.1. Rarity-4. Fine or so, the obverse slightly sharper than the grade in areas, the surfaces with a light, even roughness that is typical of the Rouen mint issues. The obverse legend and design are strong, the reverse legend weaker at the center, though everything can be made out, the date faintly so, the mintmark bold. Mottled medium brown, the obverse with a few thin striations, both sides lightly rough, more so on the reverse. Rouen struck this issue only in 1721, and they are quite rare in comparison to the issues from the La Rochelle mint; they also seem to be of uniformly lower quality, with most of the 1721-B issues showing extensive wear and rough surfaces. This is the first variety listed by Martin; this obverse die paired with three different reverses, but the reverse die was used only in this combination.
