1721-CC [Besancon Mint] John Law Liard. Fine or slightly better, the obverse legend with the same LUDOVICUS VX error (instead of the proper XV) as seen on the 1720-dated specimen offered above. Indeed, it appears that not only is this the same error – it is actually the same obverse die, here used in two different years, amazing since one would expect the error to have been noticed and the die either corrected or pulled from service completely! Medium brown the obverse legend full, the all-important VX error bold. The reverse is weak at the right side, but the date and mintmark are both visible, the rest of the lettering mostly sharp. The VX error is listed in Gadoury for the 1720 date, but completely unlisted for 1721 – and is unnoted by Smith at all in his census of Liards. The only example we have record of, and a major rarity for the advanced specialist.
