1721-H [La Rochelle Mint] Copper Nine Deniers, Martin 3.12-B.15. Listed as High Rarity-6, but certainly rarer than that since this is the sole specimen traced by Martin, and is the PLATE COIN for this reverse in his book (and one of the very few instances where the plate coin did not come from his personal collection); this rating was likely a typo and should have been High R-7. Very Fine, the legends full, the top left obverse ones slightly off the planchet as centered, everything else mostly sharp, including the date and mintmark. Darker brown, the surfaces hard, with just a trace of roughness and a few light green specks on either side. The condition is almost immaterial, as the variety is extremely rare – it is the only specimen traced by Martin in his book, and should have been called High Rarity-7, as is the case for the following lot which also had a single example traced. Its rarity is underscored by the fact that in the entire section concerning the 9 Deniers coinages there were only 4 instances where a die was illustrated by just a single photograph and that coin was not in the Martin collection (a few more dies had die states illustrated from other holdings). A chance for the specialist to acquire not only an extremely rare variety, but one of the few available plate coins used in this impressive new reference work.
