1722/1-H [La Rochelle Mint] Copper Nine Deniers, Martin 2.5-C.1. Rarity-3. Very Fine, struck from the late state of the obverse die with extensive die swelling in the obverse fields, as shown on the Martin plate which leads to the loss of a few letters in the legend at the lower right. The reverse is sharper, with the legend full save the S of COLONIES, the date bold, the mintmark weaker but visible. Pleasing tan with some darker toning around some of the legends, the surfaces hard and with just light marks from circulation as expected for the grade. This obverse was paired only with this reverse, while the reverse was later used in one other combination, presumably after this obverse failed. The overdates are, as a group, rarer than the regular 1722-H pieces. Walter Breen claimed discovery of the overdate in 1961, though it is likely it was recognized earlier, but just not mentioned in print; some dies show the overdate quite prominently, and there were serious 19th century Canadian numismatists who would have noticed that. When Breen wrote his Encyclopedia he stated there were three varieties – by the time Syd Martin’s book was published in 2015 that number increased to 23 different varieties, using 13 different reverse dies that were overdated!
