1722-B [Rouen Mint] John Law Half Sol. Fine, well struck for the grade, with the legend full and particularly strong on the obverse, the design detail sharp. Light brown, struck on a somewhat flawed planchet that is the norm for Rouen for the later years of this coinage, here with a deep flaw at the left reverse that was there before the coin was struck, the surfaces showing improper annealing with light striations that appear to be roughness at first glance, but the choice color shows otherwise. These later issues, post-1721 when Law was no longer in power, are mostly quite rare and seldom come choice. It is likely that the handful of mints that struck them were using up pre-existing planchets or copper stock, and perhaps unfinished dies. Smith notes just 4 of this date and mintmark in his survey of 255 different Half Sols.
