1723-K [Bordeaux Mint] John Law Half Sol. Choice Very Fine, a tad weak at the central areas, but with extremely pleasing surface quality that argues for the grade. Full legends, the letters mostly all sharp, the date and mintmark both strong. The obverse bust shows good detail, the reverse shield weaker. Gorgeous light brown, the surfaces hard and glossy – the color very similar to that often seen on the 1721-2 copper 9 Deniers pieces, though Bordeaux did not strike that issue. This is a previously UNLISTED variety, without an engraver’s mark on the reverse before the date – a type not noted in Smith’s work, and the only example of the type that we have seen. Since the mark was put on each die by the engraver it is something they didn’t often neglect to do! A find for the specialist – not only a choice example of a very rare date and mint, but a previously unknown major type for that mint!
