1723-Q [Perpignan Mint] John Law Sol. Very Fine or slightly better in terms of wear, a bit weak at the absolute right of either side resulting in the loss of a few letters there, the remainder of the legend sharp, with a full date and mintmark, the latter unusual for the mint. Strong design detail, the obverse bust showing much hair and facial features. Medium tan with some darker hues, the surfaces finely rough; the planchet was made from a defective cutter, with a distinct tab at the lower left obverse – something that became worse over the years. This variety is the usually-seen type with the engraver’s mark of a trefoil before the date. The Perpignan mint issues are usually quite rare – but this date is the one major exception. In Smith’s survey of 262 Sols he found a whopping 75 of this date and mint, with only the 1720-S having more examples (though that was split between the types of two different engravers).
