1724-Q [Perpignan Mint] John Law Sol. Nearly Very Fine, struck on the usual wretched planchet, and struck off-center as well, pushing the legends at the right off the edge; the legends at the left are strong, as is the date (the final digit weaker but readable). Very nice design detail on either side. Light russet with some patination, the surfaces very lightly rough, the planchet with some flaws on either side, which are pretty much the norm for the Perpignan issues after 1722. This is another example of the work of Louis Brodus II, and his different of a hat is placed before the date; at this point he was still not chief engraver, which seems to have happened in 1725. Despite the crude planchet and poorly centered strike it is clear that his skill at making dies improved, as can be seen in comparison with the 1723-dated dies he engraved, offered two lots earlier. Very rare, Smith notes just 5 examples of this date in his census of 262 different Sols – but does not note how many of those 5 were of the regular type with the trefoil before the date and how many had the hat. We have seen just one other of this date with the hat different, and suspect that it is the rarer of the two types.
