“9” – Rennes Mint - 1739 – “9” Mint Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 225. Rarity-6. This is the Bob Vlack specimen, and appeared as Lot 5141 in the January, 2008 sale of his collection by Stack’s where it was somewhat briefly described as “Overall Fine. Pale brown in color. A scarce issue and one of the handful of dates that are collectible from this mint.” The obverse is probably a full VF, the reverse weaker and with some planchet flaws at the upper right portion of that side, the surfaces otherwise hard and with traces of original silvering around the obverse legend and design. Most of the French mints used a letter or letters to identify themselves, but three used other symbols – Rennes, Aix and Pau, and all are difficult to find. While Vlack rated this variety as only an R-6, we note that the Ford collection didn’t have an example of the Rennes mint for any year, and we suspect the coinage is slightly rarer than supposed. This example, ex Vlack, seems to be the only one to appear for auction for this particular variety as well. Accompanied by Bob’s original typed envelope and the lot ticket from the sale of his collection.
