A - Paris Mint - 1739-A Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 17. Rarity-1 for the variety, Rarity-8 as a major error strike. Uncirculated, a DOUBLE STRUCK example, another exceedingly rare error in the series. The original strike was slightly off-center, pushing the tops of a few letters at the base of the obverse and upper reverse off the planchet. The second strike was very off center, resulting in a tab at the lower left obverse and upper right reverse that shows denticles and the tops of a few letters. The second strike is positioned over a few letters on either side, the rest of the legend from the original strike all bold, with individual letters, numbers and designs all sharp. Pleasing light golden toning atop lustrous surfaces that retain full silvering, a very attractive and eye-catching coin! A few light striae and minor toning marks, the reverse with a light green spot at the rim which can likely be removed. While not rare as a variety, this is an error that is almost never seen in the billon coinage (indeed, we have records of just one other). The choice condition of the coin suggests that it was saved because of the error – or because it wasn’t accepted in commerce when someone tried to spend it! In either case, it is a specimen that collectors will likely fight over today.
