Z – Grenoble Mint - 1740-Z Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 222a. Rarity-5. Very Good or so, weak at the top obverse, though the date can be faintly seen, the same with the legend on this side, though the letters around the date are faint; the central design is sharp, and what one would expect for a coin that graded Fine. The reverse is similar, the peripheral legend weak, but most of the letters can be made out, and again the central design is sharp. Light tan, the surfaces hard, with just a few light edge chips, as made. This weakness is pretty much diagnostic for the variety, and caused by worn dies. In his book Vlack states that there is “possibly no stop before and after Dolphin,” which indicates that he had not seen one with a sharp reverse; the example in his collection was called Very Good/About Good, a bit harsh and shows more of the reverse legend, while the present example is much sharper at the base of the obverse and without the roughness on the Vlack coin. This example was actually purchased from Vlack after the publication of his book but before the sale of his collection, and he likely debated which to keep and which to sell! No example of the variety in Ford, and the only auction record we can find is the Vlack coin – which means it is likely that the rarity rating is too low. Accompanied by Vlack’s original typed envelope.
