“9” – Rennes Mint - 1742 – “9” Mint Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 228. Rarity-6. Another example from the Bob Vlack collection, this one appearing as Lot 5256 (this sale presented coins in date order instead of mint order like the Ford collection, meaning that all the 1739’s were listed in mint order, then the 1740’s and so on). It was tersely described as “Fine/Very Good. Mottled obverse, even medium gray reverse. Scarce.” The grade is probably a bit low, the obverse appears to be a full VF, with the legend, date, mintmark and design motif all sharp; the reverse is definitely a shade weaker at the center, though the legend is again full, and the coin displays ample original silvering that has toned down to the color noted. Another piece that is called “only” Rarity-6 but was missing completely from the Ford sale (as was any example from this mint), and the only auction record found is for this exact coin, though a few are certainly known in private collections. A pleasing piece for a tough mint, accompanied by Vlack’s original typed envelope and the lot ticket from the sale of his collection.
