Cow – Pau Mint - 1743-Cow Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 285. Rarity-7. Nearly Very Fine, well-struck for this mint, though some areas are weaker than others. On the obverse NO of NOM is weak, as are the first two digits of the date, the rest reasonably sharp, the distinct cow mintmark bold at the base of the obverse. The legend is full on the reverse, a few letters slightly weaker than the rest, but all there. The Pau Mint issues are curious in that the reverse dies starting in this year leave the V off of NAV, abbreviating that word as NA and the legend doesn’t end with REX, like all the other mints, but rather with RE . B, that final letter a monogram, but Vlack doesn’t say of what, or discuss its relevance – a mystery for some intrepid researcher to untangle! Light olive color, some original silvering present on either side, the surfaces with a light graininess but much better than normally found for a Pau mint issue. The edge a bit chipped at the base of the obverse, but no real damage. The Vlack coin was called VF and rough and flawed, though we thought it nice – and the audience agreed as that coin, which received just a two-line description soared to over US $2,000. That example is the only other one we have seen at public auction, and this rarity will surely be contested by specialists.
