A - Paris Mint - 1748-A Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 28. Rarity-8. Very Good or so, sharper than that grade from wear, but somewhat weakly struck. The obverse legend is strong save a few letters at the extreme left which are weak or gone, the date weak but visible, the mintmark sharp; the reverse is stronger overall, with the legend full save for the R of REX which is only partially visible. Nice design detail. We note that there is no dot between DOM and the mintmark on the obverse, which may be the result of a filled die, but it could also not have been there to begin with, in which case this would be an UNLISTED variety, and would also be considered a Rarity-8 item. Medium gray toned down from the original silvering, some darker hue at the left obverse, but an attractive, cleanly worn coin. An exceedingly rare variety – this one was actually missing completely from Vlack’s personal collection which (as one would expect from the author of the book) was the largest one formed to that time. The only auction record for the variety we have been able to trace is the Ford specimen, where the cataloguer noted that 1748 was one of the two or three rarest dates from the Paris mint – the audience agreed as the slightly sharper Fine in that sold for an amazing US $1,495! Given the fact that the only specimen sold at public auction was little nicer, this is surely a rare for the specialist.
