A - Paris Mint - 1757-A Billon Sous Marques. Vlack Unlisted. Rarity-8 for the metal this is struck in. This example was Lot 5562 of the January, 2008 Stack’s sale of Bob Vlack’s collection where it was described as “Fine. An interesting specimen, the type of V37a (second semester Paris strike) but in a metal that is coppery red in color where exposed from beneath the darker overlying brown. The denomination should not, of course, have been struck in copper so this piece might be particularly interesting to the advanced specialist collector of the series.” It is accompanied by the original lot ticket from the sale as well as Vlack’s original typed envelope. The reason for a copper strike is unknown – but given the obvious wear on the coin it was made for circulation. Had something like this been noticed it could have serious ramifications for the mint director – who literally signed his name to each coin with his different. While the amount of silver in each Sous Marques was minimal it was still supposed to be there, justifying the valuation of each coin. Some of the mints far from Paris played with the silver percentage in their billon issues, but it is unlikely that anyone in Paris – literally under the eye of the government – would risk doing such a thing! An interesting piece for the specialist indeed.
