A - Paris Mint - 1760/58/4-A Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 44b. Rarity-6. Very Fine, choice in all respects. Well struck, the legends full on either side, the individual letters all strong; the reverse die in a late state with a prominent break at the X of XV across the field and through the fleur-de-lys there. Deep golden color, with lighter gold around the legend, this the original silvering that has toned down. Minor circulation marks, but a charming coin. A very unusual overdate in the series, and Vlack calls this a triple overdate. The 1760/58 portion is sharp, and easily visible with the top of the 5 peeking out at the top of the 6, while most of the underlying 8 can be seen within the 0; the previous overdate with the 4 is more subtle, with the top point of that digit visible at the top of the 0/8. Not only is this an overdate, but it is also something new – an “over-different!” The engraver changed in 1760, with Charles Norbert Roettiers replacing Joseph Charles Roettiers de la Bertarche – keeping that position in the greater Roettiers family for three generations. The earlier two used a rose different, but the new engraver decided to use a cross. Since this die was previously dated 1754 and then 1758, it had the expected rose mark, but the new engraver simply punched his cross different over that! This may well be the first die that the new engraver made – it would be easier to repunch a few numbers and a mark than creating a new die from scratch. Always popular due to the wild overdate, the present example is more evenly struck than the Vlack specimen.
