1767-A French Colonies Copper Sou. Vlack 1-A, without the RF countermark. Choice Very Fine, the obverse closer to a full EF grade. The obverse is bold, everything sharp, showing the diagonal diebreak connecting I and B at the base (the easiest way to identify the variety). The reverse legend is full, a few letters weaker than those on the obverse, though all visible; just a bit sharper here and the coin would have merited the full EF grade. Deep tobacco brown surfaces with lighter devices, some minor roughness, but overall choice to the eye. Vlack 1-A is the most commonly encountered variety, and comes with more of the known countermarks than any other variety, 12 of the 15 listed. This example, however, is without the RF countermark, a far rarer variation. It’s estimated that just a small percentage of the total mintage, perhaps as low as 25%, exists without the RF mark; this particular offering is strong on varieties without the countermark. From the Philip Keller collection, with his original envelope giving a purchase date from Coin Galleries in 1954. The Keller collection is one that Bob Vlack used when writing his series of articles, and it remained intact until 2010 when it was sold by Heritage, which did an excellent job of keeping Keller’s original envelopes with his coins.
