1770 Countermark on a blank copper planchet, said to be for Guadeloupe and other areas. One side is countermarked with the 1770 date, the first digit made from a letter I and tilted to the right. The other side has the large initials G.D. Dark brown with some oxidation on either side, the surfaces with a light roughness as expected for a copper coin that spent time in an ocean climate. This countermark is said to have been used for the islands of Guadeloupe, Desirable and Martinique. Not listed in Vlack since it isn’t a billon issue or tied to them, but it is eminently collectible as an adjunct item. Extremely rare, we have not seen one at auction for well over a decade; this is a piece that deserves some serious research!
