1779 French Colonies Crowned C Struck Issue. Vlack 379. Rarity-1 for the variety, but UNLISTED struck in brass instead of copper, Rarity-7 as such. Extremely Fine, a lovely example of this simple coinage. The Paris Mint (and, likely, La Rochelle), moved from countermarking blank planchets by hand to striking them in a coinage press, one die having the Crowned C motif and the other blank – this gave the same general look to the piece, but did not cause any distortion on the blank side as would happen when a countermark was applied. It was also much more efficient, requiring less manpower and time. There are two main types of this issue, this one with the top of the C touching the circular band of the crown. From the Mike Ringo collection, with his original envelope.
