1781-A Cayenne Two Sous. Vlack 382. Rarity-6. Very Fine, well struck with the legends and design sharp. Light brassy color with mottled darker hues (Vlack notes that “the metal used is always in question” and we have seen examples that appear pure copper, others that are brass, and a few that were silvered). The present example was recovered from St. Thomas Harbor – now part of the US Virgin Islands but at the time part of the Danish West Indies! The circulation of a French coin in other territories is not unexpected since few colonizing nations ever provided enough coinage to their possessions – especially those on islands far away.
