(1795-1811) Montserrat countermark. Vlack 405. Rarity-5. Very Fine or so, an “M” countermarked on the reverse of a 1789 Cayenne Two Sous. This is one of the PLATE COINS in the Vlack book, the first of the four different illustrated in a row for this variety; the other three coins appeared in the auction of his collection while this one was purchased privately from Vlack prior to that. Light brown, the surfaces with minor graininess and some darker coloration at a few of the letters, but overall quite choice for one of these, and with nice eye appeal given the good color. The Cayenne host coin was a late die state example with a large die break at the left obverse and another at the lower reverse. These counterstamped issues used on various islands were collectively known as “black doggs” – the ocean climate was generally not kind to billon or copper coins; this one would qualify as a “tan dogg.”
