(1795-1811) Montserrat countermark. Vlack 405 type, but UNLISTED over a 1782 Cayenne Two Sous. Rarity-8 as such. Very Fine, a boldly struck host coin, the M countermark weaker at the center of the obverse. The legends of the Cayenne Two Sous are sharp, the central reverse a bit weaker from the countermarking process, but the 7 and 2 of the date are bold, making this unquestionably a 1782 issue – completely unlisted in Vlack, which has only the 1789 date for a Cayenne host (a much rarer host was the 1749 Birmingham counterfeit Sous Marques). Vlack notes that “several styles of the M within a circular indent are known,” and it is likely that some of those are counterfeit marks, but much research needs to be done on this whole area to figure that out! The present example is one of just two examples known over a 1782-dated host, and it was part of the fabulous collection of West Indies coinages formed by Edward Roehrs, which was sold in several auctions by the British firm Dix Noonan Webb.
