(1798) Tobago Countermark. Vlack 442 type, but UNLISTED on a blank planchet. Rarity-2 for variety, Rarity-7 as such. This is the more commonly seen TB countermark with a small “o” underneath it, which Vlack lists as coming on four distinct host coins – Crowed C Stampees, Cayenne Two Sous and both 1749 and 1769 Birmingham forgery Sous Marques; this completely unlisted blank planchet adds a fifth major type of host for this issue. Very deeply impressed on a thin planchet which appears to be on the brassy edge of the copper spectrum. Lightly grainy surfaces as expected for something that was never struck with dies, only minor marks from circulation. To the best of our knowledge this is the ONLY example of a Tobago countermark on a blank planchet – and is highly important as such. From the Mike Ringo collection, with his original envelope.
